3 Reasons Why You Should Pre-Poo For Wash Day!

Hey Beautiful People!
This weekend I was able to skip wash day and I’m convinced it is because of one step in my wash day routine. Pre-poo. No, this has nothing to do with your bowel movements and everything to do with the funniest word in the natural hair community.
Pre-poo is “pre” sham”poo”. Pre-pooing is the step where you apply conditioner or oil to you hair before shampooing your hair. There are many DIY pre-poo masks you can make, as well. In the past, I’ve used banana, honey and olive oil to whip up a mask, applied to my dry hair and sat under the dryer for 15 minutes while it really worked in my curls! It’s really about preference so, on a regular I’m either using an oil already in my house (usually coconut or olive, as they are the only two oils that actually penetrate the hair follicle) or a budget-friendly conditioner. Now, the why’s … I’ve got 3!
  1. PROTECTION, PROTECTION, PROTECTION! Pre-pooing provides a layer of protection for your hair during the stressful shampoo process. Especially if you are using a sulfate shampoo, like Aussie Moist Collection, like I am, this is a step you do not want to skip out on. Sulfate shampoo can strip your hair of it’s natural oils needed for shine and definition, however when you pre-poo with an oil or creamy conditioner it can offer a buffer your hair may need during the shampoo process.
  2. DETANGLING! Textured hair naturals know detangling can be tedious and time-consuming but, pre-pooing makes detangling so much easier for me! Allowing the oil or conditioner to penetrate the hair follicle before clarifying or shampooing, makes detangling faster and results in a lot less shedding and breakage!
  3. MOISTURE! I’ll be honest, pre-pooing is a step I used to always skip. I didn’t understand the benefits of adding product to your hair that you were going to wash right out anyway. However, now that I have added this step to my routine and have been more consistent than not (hey, we all have our weeks!) I have noticed my wash and go’s or styles last longer without refreshing than when I skip this step. It has a lot to do with the moisture. My hair tends to get very dry and pre-pooing helps retain moisture throughout the wash day process and upcoming week!
